Editorials

Lakshmana Das Narla

This is a complete, up-to-date, well organized book dealing with all aspects of imaging of child abuse. This second edition updates a book first published in 1987. It includes a thorough discussion of the differential diagnosis of abuse, including osteogenesis imperfecta, one of the key diagnoses to be excluded in children with fractures. The imaging of child abuse is very sensitive and at the same time very complex, and any radiologist dealing with children needs a classic, handy reference book. This book fulfills that need; the author and contributors did an outstanding and authoritative job. The primary target audience is any radiologist interpreting pediatric x-rays, but in particular pediatric radiologists. As the author points out, pediatricians, surgeons, orthopedists, and professionals in the fields of child protection, law enforcement, and the legal community can use this book as an authoritative resource. Though child abuse has been described since 1946, the author, with his superb histopathological correlation, puts forth ""the"" book dealing with the complex subject of child abuse. He is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of child abuse. This book covers the entire spectrum of diagnostic imaging of child abuse, starting with structure and developmental contexts of skeletal injury, which plays a significant role in evaluation of children with child abuse. Newer cross-sectional imaging modalities, and especially the impact of magnetic resonance imaging in evaluation of the central nervous system, are well documented. The contributors have done a commendable job describing the normal variants and differential diagnoses of diseases simulating abuse. All ofthe illustrations, line drawings, and histopathological examinations are of high quality. This is the book any radiologist or other professional dealing with abused children will be using in their daily practice. The author has done a superb job of updating the information on imaging of abuse, this second edition is an unmatched, complete, authentic reference in the field of diagnostic imaging of child abuse.
