Overview

Dialysis Access: A Multidisciplinary Approach gives radiologists, nephrologists, and surgeons the complete knowledge base they need to deliver effective, coordinated care to dialysis patients with vascular access needs. This practical guide explains how to implement the National Kidney Foundation's Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative (DOQI) guidelines for vascular access and details procedures for creating vascular access...monitoring access failure...treating blocked access...and inserting and using central and peritoneal dialysis catheters. The state-of-the-art coverage includes discussions on pharmacologic interventions to prevent access failure and innovative concepts such as outpatient vascular access centers and new catheter designs.

Dr. Gray is the lead author for the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR)'s Dialysis Access Reporting Standards. International contributors are expert interventional radiologists, nephrologists, and vascular access surgeons. Dialysis Access: A Multidisciplinary Approach fully integrates these specialties' perspectives, providing the insight needed for optimum management of problems and offering an effective blueprint for working in concert with other specialists.

Reviewer:B. Peter Sawaya, MD(University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description:This book provides in-depth review of both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis access issues that include creation, use, monitoring, and management of access failure.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a complete, up-to-date discussion of dialysis access-related issues. Dialysis access failure and complications are major problems facing patients in the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) program. In the U.S., dialysis access issues account for the majority of cost and morbidity for ESRD patients. This book provides a comprehensive central source of information on dialysis vascular and peritoneal access. It includes in-depth review of the data supporting current access management practices. The objectives are fully met by the authors.
Audience:The book is written primarily for nephrologists, vascular surgeons, and their respective trainees. It can also be used as a reference source for the numerous health professionals involved in vascular access management at all levels of expertise. Over 60 authors, all experts in their field, contributed to this book.
Features:This book covers the physiology, creation, monitoring, and management of dysfunctional and failed accesses. The authors have done an extensive review of the literature and have created an excellent evidence-based reference book on dialysis access. The figures are of high quality and are an equal mix of charts, graphs, pictures, and actual angiograms. This helps the reader gain an understanding of some complicated concepts. A unique and excellent part of the book is designated for current innovative concepts.
Assessment:This is an excellent book. It is rather comprehensive and has great clinical applicability. It is written in a superb and easy-flowing fashion. It is a must book to have for all clinicians caring for dialysis patients. It should also be made available as a reference in the dialysis units. To my knowledge, this is a unique book solely devoted to dialysis access.
