Reproduced from academic and professional journals, 28 articles demonstrate the very malleable contours of modern terrorism, and the difficulties of determining its limits and nature. Among the major themes are the definition of terrorism; whether it is a distinct species of political violence or an extension of other forms of activity such as low-intensity warfare; its differing manifestations; whether a new form of the phenomenon has emerged since the end of the Cold War; to whom the use of terrorism is most likely to appeal; and the character of those who practice terrorism. Among specific topics are environmental terrorism, single-issue terrorism, and the political uses and abuses of definition.
