Synopsis

All states are doomed to diplomacy, and there has been a quiet counterrevolution in the way it is conducted. These themes are elaborated here via discussion of the art of negotiation and the many channels through which it is practised. The fourth edition of Diplomacy offers the most up-to-date information about current diplomatic practice, presents it in historical context, and provides a tight structure to assist its understanding. Public diplomacy is the subject of a provocative new chapter, while consular work - now more important than ever because of the massive increase in cross-border movements - is among those which receive another.
