School Library Journal

Gr 8-12-- A short self-help book that includes many suggestions for self-development. Smith takes a cursory look at body language, the power of positive thinking, the ``you are what you eat'' and ``dress for success'' syndromes, accentuating the positive, etc. There is a detailed index, and the list of further reading includes both fiction and nonfiction titles. Illustrated with both full-color and black-and-white photos, the book shows teens from many ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The easy vocabulary and large print might encourage reluctant readers, but may turn-off more proficient students. Geared toward helping young people solve their own problems, this encouraging offering will find a ready audience, probably through the recommendations of librarians and guidance counselors. --Dot Minzer, North Barrington School, Barrington, IL
