School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Two well-organized and succinctly written series titles. Both books are well documented. Bayer discusses insomnia, hypersomnia, and narcolepsy; nightmares and night terrors; sleepwalking and other sleep-movement conditions; breathing-related sleep problems; and sleep-wake rhythm disturbance; and includes a final chapter on current research on the subject. Carolyn Simpson's Coping with Sleep Disorders (Rosen, 1996) is more anecdotal but doesn't cover as many disorders, and is not as scientific. Partner discusses the symptoms, causes, and treatments of affective and behavioral disorders in children. He looks at mental retardation; learning, motor skills, and communication disorders; pervasive developmental disorders; attention-deficit and disruptive behavior; tic disorders; and other conditions. Many books are devoted to the individual disorders, but few titles discuss them together, making this one a good choice for small libraries. The black-and-white photographs neither add nor detract from the texts. Lists of related organizations are appended in both books.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
