Children's Literature

DK does it again, this time with a series of Pockets, small (approximately 3"x4") sturdy paper bound books that include 40 titles, ranging from aircraft to world history. Each book begins with a brief overview of the page layout of the publication, describing all of the features. This is important, because one of the reasons DK's books are so successful is their distinctive use of illustrations, photographs and white space. The introduction describes what mammals are, their birth and growth, and some of their distinguishing features. It is interesting to see how much we have in common with other mammals, such as our hair. A world map places the mammals by habitat. The remainder of the book is a discussion of each of the mammal groups by habitat: woodland and forests, rainforests, grasslands, deserts, mountains and polar and oceans/fresh water. Amazing facts are included in each section, for instance, shrews eat their own weight in food each day, and can starve to death in three hours. Also, an adult elephant's tooth weighs more than a brick. These little books are fun to hold, a joy to peruse and extremely informative.
