Children's Literature - Kimberly O'Meara

All types of animals need haircuts, but do you? This "Early Experience" book, intended for the three- to six-year-old age range, engages the listener in understanding why animals and people, young and old, need their hair cut. Beginning with animals that do and do not get haircuts, the story segues into adults and small children. The text, although a bit wordy, offers a creative mode for decreasing a child's anxiety about getting his or her hair cut. Coupled with engaging illustrations that are simple in detail but true to life's experiences, the book is sure to be useful to parents and teachers alike. While not action-packed, this title presents factual information in a fun way and offers an excellent learning opportunity for young listeners. Appropriate for a preschool or daycare setting, it would be an excellent addition to a thematic unit including art projects and planned field trips to the local barber shop or salon.
