PreS-Gr 3-Munro combines two kid-pleasing formats-lift-the-flap and picture puzzle-in this bright, bold book. Each spread features a different door, and behind the flap youngsters find a setting rendered in Munro's colorfully busy cartoon style. Even more flaps can be found under the first, allowing children to peek inside cabinets in the firehouse, into the stable at the barn, under the hood of a car in the garage, and more. An accompanying verse invites a search for 7 to 11 objects in each picture, with an apple and a hat providing continuity across all the spreads. The final illustration features an opening of a different kind: a book, or entry to a fantastic world, where readers can search behind castle doors and windows. The clever design is well integrated into the story-even the title page features doors to open. The flaps' sturdy construction, much thicker than the average for this type of book, will stand up to a great deal of wear and tear from eager young hands. Munro invites readers in rhyme to lift ten big single- or double-flap doors to look for objects inside. But that's only the beginning, as each opens onto a room or vista chock full of clothing, food, tools, gear, knickknacks, an occasional glimpse of a human figure for scale, and, best of all, even more doors. Given chances to peer into a firehouse and a spaceship, a barn, a stuffed refrigerator, a doctor's office, and similarly enticing scenes, children will pore delightedly over each exactly drawn, instantly recognizable detail. Munro tucks a hat and an apple into each view, and closes with "a door of a different kind- / to fantastic worlds that will open your mind." It's a storybook, with a medieval landscape inside. Never have the pleasures of discovery been more generously fulfilled. (Picture book. 4-8)
