VOYA

Marking an obvious path to the future 007, this third installment is the most marvelously complex in The Young Bond series. The mystery begins after one of the Eton professors sends a cryptic, confusing resignation letter, which he requests be read by Pritpal, a student in his crossword club. Readers begin to envision the evolution of the mind of James Bond as he, Pritpal, Tommy, Perry, and several other boys work steadily to decrypt the clues and puzzles. Bond must battle dark forces to save the world from villains Sir John Charnage, his misbegotten henchmen Ludwig and Wolfgang Smith, and the cagey Russian "Babushka." The mystery turns to high action-adventure with danger at every corner over the next forty-eight hours as Bond is reunited with Red Kelly and his sister Kelly Kelly. Readers catch glimpses of the Bond tradition with world-class cars and car chases, games of chance, classic one-liners, a chance to save the world, and adventurous women. Kelly Kelly is the first incarnation of the later Bond girls but without the sexy overtones. Great historical language and period touches of 1930s London enlighten without forcing history lessons upon the reader. The latter half of the book also introduces some of that wonderful Bond action, which keeps the book well-paced and provides plenty of fear, menace, and gore as well as creative thinking to escape death, all of which will attract a wide audience of pleasure readers. From Barnes & Noble

In the third entry in this teen adventure series, young James Bond has only 48 hours to save a professor from his fiendish kidnappers. Dangers abound in Double or Die, but many readers will be struck most by the novel's secret codes and puzzles. A perfect fit for fans of Alex Rider -- and James Bond.

School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up- This installation in the series begins while James is attending Eton. The professor in charge of his roommate's crossword-puzzle club departs the school unexpectedly and leaves a cryptic letter to the boy explaining his absence. That strange note, combined with the clues from his last crossword contribution to the London Times , has the boys off on an adventure to solve the mystery and rescue Mr. Fairburn. They must decipher all manner of word clues, and the author does a good job of reviewing the last clue while moving on to the next so that readers don't get lost. James and his friends use their wits, but his agile athletic abilities also come in handy as they run after and away from the menacing bad guys. The plot is clever and well developed, and the boys and their actions are believable. An added bonus is the discussion of the medical oddities found at London's Royal College of Surgeons, which will be highly prized among teen boys for the gross-out factor. Students who cut their teeth on Donald J. Sobol's "Encyclopedia Brown" series (Delacorte) will love this more mature mystery, and will have fun trying to figure out the clues before Bond, James Bond.-Jake Pettit, Thompson Valley High School Library, Loveland, CO
