The Barnes & Noble ReviewE. E. Knight is best known for his post-apocalyptic Vampire Earth saga, which mixes down-and-dirty military science fiction with otherworldly Lovecraftian horror, but if his all-ages fantasy saga The Age of Fire is any indication, he may very well be the next coming of Christopher Paolini (Eragon et al.).
Dragon Avenger, the second novel in the series, isn't so much a sequel to 2005's Dragon Champion as it is an alternate adventure stemming from the same narrative source. While Dragon Champion followed the scaleless gray dragon Auron after his parents were slaughtered by dwarves, Dragon Avenger chronicles the adventures of Auron's sister Wistala, as she sets off alone into the Upper World vowing vengeance against those who killed her beloved parents. But after being befriended by the kindhearted elf Rainfall and a misfit group of animal companions, Wistala begins to learn about the complexities of the world around her -- and soon realizes that vengeance can come in many unlikely forms…
On his web site, Knight lists a number of classic novels he read in his youth that inspired him to write the Age of Fire novels -- Tolkien's The Hobbit, McCaffrey's Pern sequence, Adams's Watership Down, et al. -- and while Dragon Champion and Dragon Avenger aren't exactly modern-day literary masterpieces, they are very well written fantasy adventures with numerous coming-of-age themes that should appeal to readers of all ages. Those who enjoy reading Paolini's Inheritance trilogy, specifically, should enjoy Knight's tales featuring sibling dragons. Paul Goat Allen

Knight chronicles the gritty coming-of-age story of the dragon Wistala (sister to Auron, from 2005's Dragon Champion) in the second Age of Fire novel. When her young family is betrayed and decimated by a clan of dwarfs while father AuRel is away, Wistala must carry the awful news north to him. But she finds AuRel badly wounded after running afoul of the very same dwarfs, and before she can nurse him back to health, a hunter called the Dragonblade kills him. Once again, Wistala must run for her life, vowing vengeance, even though she knows a year must pass before she's grown enough to carry out her revenge plan. Befriended by the elf Rainfall of Hypatia, she matures and gains the wisdom to temper her plans. Coming-of-age themes such as personal responsibility and family give the novel a strong YA slant, but Knight makes the story complex enough to entertain readers of all ages. (Dec.)
