The National Training Center (NTC) at Ft. Irwin, California, provides the most realistic military training available apart from actual warfare. U.S. battalion-size units participate in mock battles against similar units trained to use Soviet tactics. Everything is set up as it would be in war; ``kills'' are decided electronically. Bolger was a company commander in the 2-34th during its two-weeks' training at NTC. He tells what happened, both good and bad. Bolger writes well, and the reader gets the feel of the problems and strains of actual combat, especially in regard to how the reality of war can destroy good planning.
