Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin

Set up a reading center, but call it a free-time Craft Corner. Stock it with the books and materials from your own library and supply closet. No need to point out that while they're having a good time making something, your students will be following written directions-in other words, practicing one of the most difficult of reading skills. Begin with plain newsprint, the backs of used ditto paper/computer printouts and other sheet scraps, as well as paper for finished work and Doug DuBosque's paperbacks Learn to Draw Now! and Learn to Draw 3-D. In the first, Mr. DuBosque provides straightforward, step-by-step, illustrated introductions to drawing basic forms; in the second, he provides equally clear instructions for perspective drawing.

School Library Journal

Gr 6-12-- Drawing the dimensional qualities of ordinary objects and scenes is a favorite subject of many students, but very little age appropriate instructional material can be found on perspective drawing. DuBosque distills this complicated subject, separating one and two point perspective and allowing artists gratification on every page. The book can be an effective learning or teaching tool. The text is minimal and encouraging, enticing readers to continue. The line drawings are clear and uncluttered. This is a step-by-step system in which the construction of a house is a seven-page process requiring only paper, pencil, ruler, and observation. Photographs help emphasize a lesson, and ``Time Out'' pages discuss common errors. An informative and useful book. --Fran Powell, George G. White School, Hillsdale, NJ
