School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-- In Driving , stories about teen accidents and statistics illustrate the importance of drug-free driving in personal terms. Brief descriptions of substances are followed by examples of how they impair ability and the legal consequences of using them. The volume contains the same information as Drinking and Driving (Crestwood, 1990) by Andy Hjelmeland, but is easier to read. Sports discusses drug addiction and steroid use, with both fictional and real athletes as examples. It doesn't cover testing and the legal aspects found in Drugs, Steroids and Sports (Watts, 1988) by Janet Mohun. Both titles have phone numbers of helpful organizations; the large print and full-color and black-and-white photographs combine to make an attractive package. There's nothing new here, but the easy reading level and respectful tone that's appropriate for a hi/lo audience might make these good choices for elementary and middle school libraries. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY
