The easy-to-read, hand-lettered instructions are printed on, under, and around actual steps, flaps, slides, spirals, and spinners, several per spread, all awash in loud colors and decorated with simple cartoon faces, scenes, and creatures. Cautioning young readers to get adult help whenever a craft knife is called for, Valenta progresses from two-cut single steps to more complex effects, including doubles and combinations, suggesting some finishing touches for handmade cards, labels, invitations, and even books, and encouraging individual variations. Though nearly impossible to process for library use without covering something up and, like most pop-ups, a poor candidate for circulation, the author's infectious enthusiasm and inventive, hands-on presentation make this an irresistible invitation to an exciting paper craft.John Peters, New York Public Library

This amazing book practices what it preaches, by providing three-dimensional instructions for making pop-ups—from the super-simple to designs that look as if only a paper engineer or the truly nimble-fingered could construct. Fortunately, the instructions are a snap to follow, and extra guidance is included for concepts that are hard to grasp, e.g., a working model helps readers visualize the fold-out paper flaps that form a frog-shaped mouth. The entire book is truly interactive: a simple turn of the page activates sliders, spirals flaps, and spinners right in front of readers' noses.
