His scripts for propaganda documentary films provide a moving and vivid picture of war-torn Britain and London in the Blitz. His feature films show him at his best in dialogue and in the exact evocation of atmosphere and place. "Rebecca's Daughters" portrays the conflict and riots which shook rural Wales in the 1840s. "The Doctor and the Devils" tells the dramatic story of a lecturer in anatomy and the body snatchers who supply him with corpses, while "The Beach of Falesa" is a tale of romance, murder and black magic mayhem set in the South Seas.
