Children's Literature

Teaching, running a business, farming and caring for animals in a zoo are just some of the ways people earn money. Children often do chores around the house to earn an allowance. You might shovel snow for a neighbor in the winter or rake their leaves in autumn in order to earn some extra money. This book, a part of the "Let's See Library" series, takes a look at some of the ways in which money can be earned. Rosinsky uses the time honored tradition of selling lemonade to explain how a successful business is run! She also touches upon important topics such as child labor and how certain laws are put in place to protect children. Other laws she discusses relate to taxes and minimum wage. Rosinsky also mentions how computers have changed the way in which many people earn money. For example, instead of driving to the office people can now telecommute to the office. Filled with colorful photographs this book is child friendly as it provides a table of contents, a glossary and an index. There are also interesting facts related to the topic at the end of the book. Additionally the author provides the readers with websites, books and the names of other resources where they can learn more about this topic. The print is large and suitable for early readers. New vocabulary words appear in bold the first time they are mentioned, which can be helpful when building vocabulary. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 6 to 8.
