Overview

Every day we use machines that require energy. Cars and buses get energy from oil. Televisions and microwaves are powered by electricity made from coal. And furnaces rely on natural gas. Oil, coal, and natural gas are fossil fuels. Fossil fuels formed underground from plants and animals that died long ago. But did you know that fossil fuels pollute the planet? And they are non-renewable. This means they won't last forever. We must join together in the quest to find and use Earth-friendly energy sources. With engaging text and eye-catching images-plus a special Going Green section-this book tells you all about Earth-friendly energy and what you can do to promote it.

Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck

People use an amazing amount of energy every day, especially in the United States. Unfortunately, most of this energy comes from methods that damage the environment, either from the smoke produced by fossil fuels or the potential meltdown of nuclear power plants. Fortunately, there are many renewable and Earth-friendly resources if we just develop the ways to use them. Solar energy can be harnessed in solar panels; some houses use panels to make energy just for one household, but with enough panels one can create a power plant. Solar power is also used by soldiers in the field and people in impoverished countries who need a little energy to cook their food. Wind power is another renewable and clean energy source, although some people object to the way they look and the fact that they can kill birds. Water power is another excellent source, but dams can harm the environment when they flood the land. Geothermal energy is another excellent option, but the technology is still under development. Lastly, scientists are also working on biofuels made from plants like corn. While most of the world's power currently comes from fossil fuels, in the future those will most likely be replaced with Earth-friendly options. Fridell's book offers a good balance of both the science of and practical uses of various energy sources, as well as suggesting steps everyone can take to reduce their personal energy consumption. VOYA - Rebecca C. Moore

This series focuses on green lifestyles and preventing global warming. Presented in glossy full color, the books' short chapters include large photographs and sidebars on every page. They also include glossaries, "going green" tips, how to write to legislators, and annotated webliographies. Earth Friendly Energy begins with reasons to look beyond fossil fuels before covering the pros and cons of solar power, wind power, water power, earth (geothermal) power, biofuels, and possible future energy sources. Although the writing is clear and simple, some basic concepts remain unexplained-what electricity is, how generators work-and others are difficult to understand without diagrams. Still the book explains the environmental issues well, and would be a useful resource for middle school reports. Other series titles cover waste management, air quality, and rain forests among other topics. Reviewer: Rebecca C. Moore
