Overview

Brebbia (Wessex Institute of Technology, UK), Beskos (U. of Patras, Greece), Manolis (Aristotle U. of Thessaloniki, Greece), and Spyrakos (National Technical U. of Athens, Greece) present the proceedings of the fifth international conference aiming to project state-of-the-art engineering information on the analysis and design cycle of structures subjected to earthquakes. The 73 papers are organized into sections devoted to site effects and geotechnical aspects; earthquake resistant design, seismic behavior and vulnerability, structural dynamics, monitoring and testing, bridges, heritage buildings and masonry construction, retrofitting, passive protection devices and seismic isolation, lifeline systems, and design codes and response spectra. The papers, which include recent theoretical research as well as specific case histories, deal with such specific topics as accelerograms for building design for hard soil in Mexico City, critical evaluation of near-field seismic records in Greece, effects of configuration of shear walls on system behavior under seismic load, analysis of earthquake wave propagation in buildings, cyclic load behavior of reinforced concrete beam-column subassemblages of modern structures, and innovative materials for bridge seismic design.
