Overview
The transition experiences of the economies of the former Soviet Union failed to conform to the predictions made by experts. The authors suggest that the lessons of transition experience call into question some of the basic premises of economics taught at the undergraduate level. Keeping their discussion away from advanced economic theory, they present a series of 12 essays introducing basic economic concepts and exploring alternative explanations better fitting empirical experience of the last decade or so. Topics include the relationship between firms and their markets, the factors of production, the role of government, monetary policy, foreign exchange rates and exchange rate crises, and the consequences for open-economy macroeconomics.
