This book in the "Raintree Biographies" series explains Hopper's art within the context of his life from childhood to his death in 1967. Multiple reproductions of Hopper's paintings combine with highly interesting text to provide a comprehensive portrait of the artist, who was influenced by Europe but truly American in his subject matter and style. Sidebars feature quotes, provide facts (e.g., Hopper's lifelong love of the sea) and clarify relevant terms (e.g., etching). The tan faux-leather background of the pages sets off representative paintings, especially those that juxtapose light and shadow, as many of Hopper's paintings do. Backmatter includes a timeline, glossary, short list of books for further reading, and an index. Although the publisher indicates a reading level 2-3, both interest level and a Fry readability level of 7th grade peg this as a picture book for upper elementary to adult readers. One minor complaint: the cover photograph shows a middle-aged Everyman in business suit; the book must be opened to find Hopper the artist. Hopper's Self Portrait with Hat would have better represented both the man and his art. 2003, Raintree, Ages 8 up.

Gr 3-5-Large print, easy-to-read introductions to artists who have made significant contributions to our culture through their documentation and expression of American life. Each slim biography begins by highlighting a significant episode in the life of the artist. This is followed by information on the individual's early life and career, and in the case of Hopper and Lange, their deaths. All of the books contain black-and-white photographs, reproductions of the artist's works, and related material. However, not all of the artwork described is pictured. In addition, youngsters may not be sure if all of the photographs in Lange were taken by the subject herself, or if they are from other sources.
