Children's Literature
This short reference book includes information about the land, people, history, schools, food, animals, sports, and holidays. The writing is factual and straightforward and serves adequately as report material. Pictures are up-to-date but the picture of animals found in Egypt is of the less well known ibex from the Sinai region rather than a more typical animal such as a sheep, goat, stork, camel or crocodile. Endmatter includes a craft project of making a snake game played in ancient Egypt. Five Arabic words are offered with English pronunciation, and a glossary, index, Internet and two nonfiction book sources for more information are also included. Gr 1-3-Although the "New True" books (Children's), the "Take a Trip" series (Watts), and the "Count Your Way-" series (Lerner) cover more information, these books offer current facts along with colorful, well-selected, full-page photos. However, the very limited texts tend to be confusing at times due to their brevity and oversimplification. Both titles include a "Hands On" activity, a few foreign words, and the address of the country's embassy. The first two pages include "Fast Facts," a simple map, and a picture and explanation of the flag and currency. Greece has a couple of minor errors: Easter eggs there are traditionally dyed red (not specified in book) and a couple of the pronunciation guides have the wrong syllables accented.
