Pickett News

Follow Don Pedro and the radish on a wild journey through town where they trample tortillas, smash into a mariachi band, and bump into a burro. RUNAWAY RADISH by Janice Levy is a fun, entertaining story for children 9 and up. With a "The Gingerbread Man" slant, Levy's book is sure to become a family favorite. Sydney Wright's illustrations are humorous as they capture the youthful antics of two fun characters.

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz

It is time for the annual festival named "Night of the Radishes," and Don Pedro gets to work carving radishes into an elaborate sculpture. He carves a castle, palm trees, knights on horses, and a throne. He reaches for the last radish to put the finishing touch on his masterpiece when the radish jumps from his hand and runs away. He sings a tune reminiscent of The Gingerbread Man and causes just as much ruckus. As he runs through the streets, we get a taste of Mexico when he bumps into a burro, a cook making mole, mariachis, and, finally, the vendor in a mercado. The radish continues singing his taunting tune with a succession of people on his heels. When the radish seems to tire out, the group that chased him through the town yell for him to stop showing concern for his health. They yell that he will get so dry, stiff, and worn that he will fall apart. For a second it seems like they care for his well being, but it is soon obvious that is not the case when you see them encircle Don Pedro to watch him carve the radish into a queen. If you loved The Gingerbread Man, then you will be amused by the twist, but if you sympathized with the little cookie, you will probably feel the same for this little radish. No matter whose side you are on, the illustrator's drawings dance across the pages, making you feel like you are on the cobblestone road chasing the radish too. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz
