Library Journal

Originally appearing as ``Letter From Washington'' columns in The New Yorker , Drew's credible reportage follows the trail of the 1988 presidential campaign. It not only informs readers about the personal and political strengths and weaknesses of the candidates, but also describes and evaluates an election process undergoing irrevocable change due to media influences. Drew purposely has not changed her original articles, allowing both valid judgements and misjudgements to stand, which gives readers an unusual sense of immediacy in the recounting of the many campaign surprises--Gary Hart's ups and downs, Bush's selection of Quayle, etc. Even better than her well-received books covering the 1980 and 1984 campaigns, this can rightfully be considered as a worthy successor to Theodore White's Making of the President classics.-- Jack Forman, Mesa Coll. Lib., San Diego
