Overview

The five essays in this book examine the connections between literary censorship and the political repression of women in Arthur Schnitzler's Frau Berta Garlan, Sigmund Freud's case history of "Dora," and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra - three male representations of female characters in Hapsburg Austria between 1900 and 1905.

Michael (English and German, Bemidji State U., Minnesota) examines three male-authored representations of women created between 1900 and 1905 by three of Vienna's most influential writers who are famous for their analysis of the female character. The case history by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), novella by Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931), and drama by Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) were all begun about the same time and influenced each other.
