Relocation covers more than 300 years of conscious and unconscious policies that deprived Native Americans of their lives, land, and self-determination. The text includes quotes from both well-known figures (Thomas Jefferson, Chief Joseph) and lesser-known sources (James Smith, Captain L.B. Webster). This well-constructed book may encourage students to explore such titles as Donald Fixico's detailed Termination & Relocation (Univ. of New Mexico, 1990). Elizabethan England presents more than biographical details of the queen who was arguably the most able and successful in Great Britain's history. While not ignoring more familiar aspects of the Tudor age (Shakespeare, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, etc.), the author discusses other elements of the period as well. Gr 8 Up-This overview of the monarch's life and times illuminates both the woman herself and the era in which she ruled. The book opens with a time line of Elizabeth's life and concurrent events in world history; its succinct text and colorful artwork set the stage for Lace's treatment of the legacies of the Elizabethan era. Chapters focus on key areas of Elizabeth's reign, including the makeup of the royal court, the Church of England, and the exploration of the New World. There are also chapters on city life, recreation, and science during the 1500s. Information on important figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots; William Shakespeare; and Sir John Hawkins is incorporated into the narrative. Tempting section headings ("Endless Flirtations," "Blood Sports") break up the text, and spicy details hold readers' interest.
