School Library Journal

PreS-K-Ellen is a small girl; her plush penguin is even smaller. The text explains that the activities in the park are frightening for Penguin, and the pictures show that the girl, too, is afraid to participate. After several unsuccessful encounters with other children, Ellen bravely approaches a girl who is clutching a beloved monkey, and they have a wonderful time together. This story, simply and sparely told, rings true to everyday playground scenes. It allows Ellen a way to express herself without embarrassment, and demonstrates that it's possible to have a good time in spite of being shy. Colorful watercolors, set on pages with ample white borders, follow the narrative accurately and reflect the emotions and activities of the youngsters. The illustrations are similar to the work of the artist's mother, Shirley Hughes, but are brighter and more contained. Vulliamy has not only inherited Hughes's talent, but also her ability to portray a child's world from a child's viewpoint.-Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY
