Overview

Perman (history, U. of Illinois at Chicago) synthesizes the historical literature written on the aftermath of the American Civil War in the southern states, attempting to balance the discussion between the various contending schools of thought. This new edition takes newer works published since the last edition into account. He himself appears to be most sympathetic to the idea that no particular group of actors, overly zealous Republicans or intransigent southern whites, were responsible for the failure of Reconstruction to fundamentally transform the South.
