Reviewer:Derek J Robinson , B.S., M.D.(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This book provides a concise but comprehensive review of the most common cardiovascular disease presentations in emergency medicine.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide an evidence-based approach to the treatment of cardiovascular emergencies. In a specialty where practice varies widely with geography and patient population, this book is a useful tool in promoting the best care for patients with cardiovascular disease. The authors are fair in presenting the results of the latest literature as well as significant disagreement in the medical community regarding specific treatment modalities.
Audience:Much of this book is tailored to the resident and attending physician. While the discussion of patient management provides relevant information for the emergency physician, there is significant information that is useful for care in the subacute setting. The background pathophysiology presented is useful for the medical student and attending physician alike.
Features:Cardiac arrhythmias are well covered and illustrated using excellent ECGs. Photos from echocardiograms would strengthen the discussion of endocarditis and pericardial tamponade.
Assessment:This book is a quick read for physician interested in bolstering their knowledge and management of cardiovascular emergencies.
