Reviewer:Richard Tupler, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This book, part of the highly regarded Case Review Series, uses 200 case studies to challenge readers on the full range of topics in emergency radiology. It covers all imaging modalities, including MRA and CTA, supplemented by over 500 relevant images. The aim of the series is to educate readers using core knowledge, question-and-answer case studies.
Purpose:This is a concise, economical, and user-friendly tool for self assessment and ER radiology rotation/oral board preparation. More importantly, it is practical and pertinent, covering emergency radiology cases that one is likely to see in practice.
Audience:The target audience includes radiology residents, fellows, and practicing radiologists. The book provides an excellent selection of cases for sharpening diagnostic skills in this challenging subspecialty area. The emphasis is on diagnosis to promote appropriate treatment of emergent medical situations. Although the case review format leads to efficient board preparation and review, this subject is particularly relevant for all radiologists, whether in training or in practice.
Features:The cases are organized into sections titled "Opening Round," "Fair Game," and "Challenge" based on three different levels of difficulty. The randomly organized cases are presented as unknowns with three to four questions on the right-hand page and on the flip-side left page, the diagnosis, answers to the questions, additional commentary, and references. Blank space is available for note taking. The 500 images effectively complement and support the text. In addition to the relevant references, each case references Emergency Radiology: The Requisites, Soto and Lucey (Elsevier, 2009).
Assessment:Though this is not a substitute for a traditional book such as the companion Requisites series, this case review format is a very good resource for radiologists to assess their knowledge. This book is easy to read and a cost effective, efficient study and review tool.

From the Publisher

In this excellent teaching aid, the authors from the Trauma and Emergency Radiology section of the University of Maryland have compiled a myriad of interesting cases that provide ample opportunity to rapidly familiarize the reader with the classic appearances of a range of emergent imaging pathology and key points concerning these diagnoses. The format mirrors the style and content of the American Board of Radiology's oral examination and allows radiological trainees a realistic preparation for their test-taking experience.Since each case in the book is distinct, this is the kind of text that one can pick up and review at any time day or night! I thoroughly recommend this fantastic book to all radiologists reviewing ED studies.Dr. Terence Featherstone, RAD Magazine, December 2009
