From The Critics
Reviewer: Karen L Campbell, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)Description: This book contains five chapters and appendixes totaling 159 pages. The author is an adjunct instructor in the School of Medicine at Emory University and is a co-administrator of the World Wide Web AltVetMed page and email discussion group for alternative medicine, veterinary homeopathy, and holistic approaches to the practice of veterinary medicine.
Purpose: The focus is to provide veterinarians with information on nutraceuticals and herbs that can be used as part of a holistic approach to patient management. The author's objectives of providing readily accessible information on products suitable for use in animals with various organ system dysfunctions, and on applications for use of a variety of nutraceuticals and botanicals, are fulfilled.
Audience: The intended audience is small animal practitioners. The book will also be of interest to veterinary students and pet owners interested in holistic veterinary medicine.
Features: This book is the first known compilation of the indications, cautions, side effects, and dosages for nutraceuticals and botanicals suitable for use in dogs and cats. It contains sample protocols and additional references for readers to consult.
Assessment: The primary shortcoming in this book is the omission of information on anticipated response times, recommendations for monitoring, and percent of patients that can be expected to have a favorable response to each product. Due to the growing interest among pet owners and veterinarians searching for alternative approaches to healing, this book will be a valuable addition to the library of small animal practitioners.
