Children's Literature
Based on the English series about the mermaid Emily Windsnap and her best friend, Shona Silkfin, this activity book is a paean to friendship and to marketing. Part I, "Best Friends," briefly introduces Emily and Shona. The rest of the book consists of one- to two-page activities, which include excerpts from the three Emily Windsnap books, for the reader and her best friend to do together. The first asks the girls (it is impossible to imagine a boy touching this book) to fill out blanks with VIFs (Very Important Facts) about themselves. Others consist of, for instance, personality profiles, handwriting analysis, jewelry-making, hair-dos, sand castle building, and mermaid costumes for a goth, a glitter girl or a happy hippie. The book concludes with a few facts about sea creatures, very brief quotations from sea stories, and twenty-five pages of blank ruled paper for the best friends to write about each other. Best friends will be cozily, if tritely, occupied and will demand purchase of the series. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
