When Emmitt Smith joined the NFL in 1990, his detractors said he couldn't be a superstar running back. He was too small and too slow, they said. He was also joining a team that had played two awful seasons in a row. What the critics did not factor was his determination. While he's neither big nor especially speedy, Emmitt Smith showed that he could move the ball. Thornley points out that Smith's tremendous success has come in spite of those who have said that he's too small and too slow. Full-color and black-and-white photographs appear throughout the text. Smith's college and pro stats through the 1995 season are appended. There are a number of books available on the subject, all of which follow a similar pattern: early years, college, sports, charity work. The only advantage this has over others, such as Bill Gutman's Emmitt Smith (Millbrook, 1995), is that it covers Smith's career through the 1995 season.
