Overview

&This 30-volume general encyclopedia, now in its 176th year in print and 70th consecutive annual revision, is intended to serve as a bridge between the specialist and the general reader and is designed to be accessible to as wide an audience as possible. It covers history, the sciences, geography, politics, economics, and a wide array of other subjects related to past and current events around the world. No major changes have been introduced, aside from the standard revisions and the inclusion of a number of new articles. This work is cited in Wilson's Public Library Catalog, Walford's Guide to Reference Material, Guide to Reference Books, and the third edition of Books for College Libraries. <:st>Although the online version is available, with all the wonderful features that the technology affords, the experience of leafing through the pages of an encyclopedia holds nostalgia for many (in particular those who vowed as children to read the whole thing and made it only part way through the "A's"). supports that feeling with typography and graphics that have a vintage look<-->just dowdy enough to be hip. This venerable reference was first published in 1829 and has been revised annually for 67 years; it is cited in and in . The new edition, of course, includes many revisions as well as new articles on subjects not previously covered, for a total of 45,000 entries. Aimed at general readers and students in about eighth grade and above, articles are arranged alphabetically, contain cross-references and bibliographies, and range from a paragraph to almost book length (for example, the material on the United States and on the two world wars). Special features include articles on each century that survey political, social, and cultural events from an international perspective; glossaries defining technical or difficult terms; bibliographies at the ends of articles; separate articles on important works of literature, philosophy, and economics, as well as the books of the Bible and significant historical documents.
