New edition of a four-volume reference (previously titled ) that addresses the enormous ramifications on a global scale of drug, alcohol, and addictive behaviors. The entries address political, economic, legal, social, public health, family well-being, and physical and mental health issues, all of which can be studied not only as a macrocosm of the way in which addictions affect every stratum of society, but also as a microcosm of misery visited on a single individual struggling to loosen the stranglehold of substance abuse. Updated information includes new brain imaging techniques, new data about the human genome and its relevance to health, material to further define the scope and nature of the problem, and studies designed to uncover the statistical relevance of various prevention, diagnosis, and treatment programs. In addition, the new name reflects the inclusion of addictive behaviors that do not involve chemical substances but appear to involve some physiological and psychological pathways in common. Edited by Carson-DeWitt, M.D., Cathleen M. Carroll (psychiatry, Yale U.), Jeffrey Fagan (public health, Columbia U.), Henry R. Kranzler (psychiatry, U. of Connecticut), and Michael J. Kuhar (Yerkes Regional Primate Center). Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
