Library Journal

Women as athletes have came a long way from the first Olympic games, where they were banned from all events, to the present day, where equality and discrimination are still issues. This study by Sherrow, the author of numerous juvenile titles, is a testimony to the many women who have left an indelible mark on the sports world. Using alphabetically arranged subject and person entries, the author has compiled an impressive assortment of notable female athletes encompassing a wide range of disciplines, from traditional events like track and field to bullfighting and football. She also includes discussions of topics such as steroids, journalism, and much more. Added features include a good introduction, photos, a time line, and an extensive bibliography. A useful reference book offering new insights and complementing the existing literature; recommended for medium and large public libraries.-Larry Little, Penticton P.L., British Columbia

Gr 7 UpWomen and Sports opens with an introductory essay that traces female involvement in sports through the ages, beginning with ancient Greece and ending with current trends. The alphabetically organized entries cover athletes, sports, organizations, and social issues (discrimination, pregnancy, steroid use, and eating disorders). The women profiled are all American-born or naturalized citizens. The poorly reproduced black-and-white photographs are dark and difficult to make out; they add little to the text. Women and the Military contains a well-thought-out, alphabetical listing of women, places, organizations (U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the Minerva Center), social and legal issues (pregnancy, hazing, Public Law 90-130), terminology ("mop commando"), and battles. An introductory essay delineates women's roles in warfare, beginning with ancient times and then focusing on the American military. Black-and-white photos extend the text. The entries in both titles have see-also references and bibliographic citations consisting of books and magazine articles. Both volumes are well organized and clearly written and would make sound purchases for collections looking for information on women's history.Maureen Connelly, New York Public Library
