Overview

Many tribal groups around the world are facing immediate cultural and even physical extinction either as a result of current threats or previous destruction. This book covers the general historical pattern in which the tribal way of life has been disrupted. It then focuses on five specific endangered cultures: the Yanomami of the Amazon Jungle in Brazil and Venezuela; the San (Bushmen) of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa; the Bambuti (African pygmies) of the Ituri Forest in Zaire, Central Africa; the Aborigines of Australia; and the Inuit (Eskimo) of the Arctic and Subarctic.

Examines five ethnic groups living tribal existences around the world and shows how assimilation into mainstream society and other factors are threatening their cultures.

Gr 6-9-Liptak looks at the customs, history, religion, rituals, values, and current situation of some of the world's indigenous peoples. Her up-to-date narrative honestly examines the Yanomami of the Amazon rain forest, the San of the Kalahari Desert, the Bambuti of Africa's Ituri Forest, the Aborigines of Australia, and the Inuits of the Arctic, and discusses the effects of mainstream society on their behaviors. She writes in a nonjudgmental tone, but identifies some of the injustices these groups have faced and discusses efforts taken on their behalf. Endangered Peoples is more culturally sensitive than Adrien Stoutenberg's People in Twilight (Doubleday, 1971; o.p.); it is less visually appealing, but easier to read than Vanishing Peoples of the Earth (National Geographic, 1968; o.p.). A list of organizations that have special interest in this area is provided. Black-and-white photographs enliven the text. This title provides a clear understanding of the problems involved in trying to honor the past and at the same time make use of the modern world's advances.-Sandra L.
