Synopsis
Scientists from across Europe, including Ukraine, present 10 lecture notes and discussion summaries from a January-February 2003 training school held at Les Houches, France. They introduce both theorists and experimenters to localized excitations in spatially discrete systems, from experimental, numerical, and mathematical perspectives. These spatially localized time-periodic motions in networks of dynamical units are also called discrete breathers, nonlinear lattice excitations, and intrinsic localized modes. The topics include computational studies of discrete breathers, slow manifolds, protein functional dynamics, and statistical physics of localized vibrations.
