Overview

This work examines the largely untold story of English sea power prior to the Norman Conquest. The author illuminates the much-neglected period 871 to 1100, an age when English rulers deployed naval resources, first against Norse Invaders, and later as an instrument of state in relations with neighbouring countries. The author has gathered together information about the appearance and use of fighting ships during the period.

Synopsis

Between the seventh and tenth centuries, Anglo-Saxon sea power was largely used on the offensive. Historian Pullen-Appleby looks at three aspects of the subject. First he considers the institutions and practices, both social and financial, that allowed rulers to use sea power militarily. Next he examines the uses to which sea power was put, together with gains and losses incurred. Finally, the ships themselves, along with the strategy and tactics of the Old English fleet are presented. A chronology of key events is provided, as well as maps of campaigns and a glossary of Old English nautical terms. Distributed in the US by The David Brown Book Co.
