School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Science activity books that focus on the environment. Both volumes are prefaced by an explanation of why studying the Earth is important. The experiments are easy to perform and deal with the observations of various phenomena, such as the differences between sand and soil and the micro-ecosystem found under a rock. Most of them call for easily available materials. Each project is followed by a discussion of what was explored, as well as a section of related activities. Adult supervision is emphasized throughout. Pen-and-ink illustrations enhance the volumes. Simple yet thorough, these series entries are excellent for teachers to use with their classes or for children to use on their own.-Helen Rosenberg, Chicago Public Library, IL
