The book addresses all aspects of epilespy, at all ages. It begins with basic descriptions and definitions of seizures, through the classification of seizures and epilepsy sundromes. The different forms of investigation are described in detail including drug and non-drug treatment options. Further chapters discuss the effects of epilepsy on lifestyle, education, and career choice and future developments. Positive, constructive advice is presented by the authors throughout the book to help sufferers manage their condition and cope with problems as and when they arise, especially in relation to many aspects of normal life such as schooling, pregnancy, driving, and work. This new edition represents a unique approach to the group of conditions known as epilepsy, and is the only publication of its kind in the UK.

Description:This is the third edition of a general introduction to the field of epilepsy. The 10 brief chapters survey broad topics in all areas of epilepsy and are intended as overviews so that readers can gain familiarity with general concepts. There are no references, but there are helpful websites for readers who may want to offer resources to their patients.
Purpose:The purpose is to serve as a general introduction to the concepts surrounding epilepsy and its management. Uniquely, the book is intended for patients with epilepsy as well as the healthcare professionals who care for them. The objectives have merit. However, this book would be useful only to those medical professionals who need a broad overview of the discipline. There are other, more comprehensive resources.
Audience:The intended audience is the broadest possible, including individuals with the condition. For a patient suffering from the condition, the book is quite helpful. Useful illustrations help to demystify the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available for treatment. The authors are highly experienced and credible.
Features:The book delivers a pithy and general overview of epilepsy. Chapters include defining epilepsy, etiologies, diagnostic tests, treatment, living with the condition, and the future. Two appendixes are germane to patients and physicians alike: patient perspectives and useful addresses and websites. Medical professionals may want to use other books if they want more information on topics.
Assessment:This is a terrific book for physicians to offer their patients and for healthcare professionals who need a quick update on the field of seizures and epilepsy. Given the rapid changes in therapy, diagnosis, and genetics, a third edition was clearly needed.
