Overview
Originally presented at a conference held in Berlin (March, 1999), 29 papers by clinicians and scientists discuss epithelial transport and barrier function in the small and large intestine. Contributions in the first section focus on the molecular structure of active ion and nutrient transporters. The second section deals with the structure and regulation of the intestinal barrier and includes an original work on the molecular structure of occludins and claudins. Various models for understanding clinical conditions are described in the third section including studies of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, HIV enteropathy, and infectious diarrhea. Papers in the final section discuss malabsorptive and leak flux diarrhea. The volume, which is not indexed, contains extended abstracts of 17 additional papers.Annotation c.
