Since the first edition of Equine Nutrition and Feeding was published in 1986, it has become the seminal work on the subject. It covers all the key topics that you need to know for your equine nutrition degree course. This comprehensive and clearly evidenced textbook covers how food is digested and nutrients are used in growing, working and breeding horses. It also explains the scientific basis for calculating nutrient and dietary requirements in an understandable manner, and shows you how to do these calculations. Special attention is also given to grassland and pasture, and to housing and diet-related diseases.

Synopsis

Since the first edition of Equine Nutrition and Feeding was published in 1986, it has become the standard work on the subject, covering every aspect of the nutrition of breeding, growing and working horses, and describing the basis upon which scientifically derived conclusions for nutrition and dietary requirements are reached.

The book has been extensively updated, revised and rewritten with a full bibliography and reference list. It has been made more practical by setting out the implications of new research for feeding programmes and it includes a full account of the toxicology, and metabolic and other diseases, related to diet. Their causes and control are discussed and comprehensive lists of definitions of terms and the abbreviations used are given.

About the Author, David Frape

David Frape PhD (Iowa), Dip Agric (Cantab), CBiol, FIBiol, FRCPath, RNutr, has published numerous papers and articles. He is also a scientific consultant and member of the Editorial Board of Equine Veterinary Journal.

Description: This complete guide to equine nutrition includes feeding for horses with special needs and toxicology. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nutrition information to horse keepers around the world.
Audience: Although the book is targeted at well-informed horse owners, it also would be a good reference for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary students
Features: It nicely covers some basic gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology, requirements of various types of horses, types of feed, how to formulate a nutrition plan, and pasture management. The sections on trace minerals are presented in the context of deficiency/toxicity, a good way to cover this. The sections on feeding particular types of horses (mares/foals/athletes) are also particularly well done. The book has a nice glossary with lots of detail.
Assessment: This update is justified by the amount of research interest in this area in recent years. Although there are many other books on nutrition (such as Feeding Horses and Ponies: Overcoming Common Feeding Problems, McBane (David & Charles Publishers, 1996)), the parts of this book that focus on pasture management and nutrition-related diseases provide broader coverage of topics than others available in this area.
