Editorials

Reviewer: Santiago D Gutierrez-Nibeyro, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of the worldwide leading clinical reference and teaching textbook on equine surgery. This update provides revised and updated information in all chapters and adds new chapters addressing recent advances in equine surgery such as regenerative medicine. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an updated reference for equine clinicians seeking information on surgical treatment of equine diseases. This is a much needed reference for equine clinicians.
Audience: The book is aimed at equine clinicians, practitioners, equine surgery residents, and students. The book covers all of the information needed to study for the American and European College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Examinations. Both authors are leading worldwide authorities in equine surgery.
Features: "Chapters are written by both American and European experts in the field of equine surgery, which results in a broad approach to surgical conditions of the horse. The best part of the book is the section on the musculoskeletal system because the information in these chapters is thoroughly revised and updated. However, the book continues to use black-and-white images and illustrations, which decreases their resolution and quality. "
Assessment: "Although the previous edition of this book appeared relatively recently, recent advances and discoveries in equine surgery make this update worthwhile. The quality of this book is superior to the third edition, but the images and illustrations should have been in color. "

From the Publisher

"That 'Auer and Stick' remains the definitive text for equine surgery residents the world over...In this new edition, several chapters have been added, and lots of minor updates have ensured and that it is bang up to date with new deelopments...Of particular interest to the general reader will be new chapters on regenerative medicine, chemical restraint for standing surgery, diagnostic imaging and postoperative physiotherapy of the orthopaedic patient...For many readers, this could be described as the only equine surgical text they will ever need."

Veterinary Record, February 2012

"Equine surgery is a useful reference text for all veterinarians who see equine patients. This book contains a wealth of information on examination, medical management and prognosis such that even veterinarins who refer on all surgical cases would still find it incredibly useful...Equine surgery is an excellent up-to-date surgical reference text, which also provides a good deal of information on equine medicine."

Australian Veterinary Journal, May 2012

Gordon J. Baker

This is a new edition of an equine surgery text first published in 1992. It is reduced in size and contains material updated and revised from recent literature (up to 1997). The section, chapter, and system based descriptions are maintained. The reduced size and updating of the material is designed to increase its availability. The descriptions and, in particular, the diagrams of surgical techniques allow it to be recommended as a ""how to"" text. The text is aimed at the equine surgeon in training and in academia. It is also a resource for research investigators and the wider audience of equine practitioners. The text is organized into twelve sections. The first three on background material and surgical biology and surgical methods are succeeded by nine sections that are system/organ based. Emphasis is placed on the musculoskeletal system. With the exception of eight color images of the histology of bone healing, all the figures and photographs are black-and-white. In the main, this second edition meets the objectives of the two editors. New diagnostic techniques have been added and their application to surgical treatments illustrated. In general, the quality of the drawings and diagrams is much better than that of the photographs and suggest that some might have been omitted. This text is a welcome addition and resource for the practicing and training veterinarian in equine surgery.
