Editorials

From Barnes & Noble

"It's time for bed, little mouse, little mouse. Darkness is falling all over the house. It's time for bed, little goose, little goose. The stars are out and on the loose" Little "mice" and "geese" children will certainly find calming thoughts in this beautifully illustrated bilingual board book.

Children's Literature - Anna Rabin

This bilingual version of Time for Bed will create new Spanish-speaking fans for the book. On each charmingly illustrated page, an adult animal tells a baby animal that it is time for bed. The second line describes a sign that it is bedtime from the natural world, such as that "darkness is falling" or a child's world, such as "The very last kiss is almost here." The inclusion of a few less cuddly animals, such as snakes, bees, and fish, broaden the book's appeal. F. Isabel Campoy's translation beautifully captures the spirit of the English, although she changes the meaning occasionally to maintain the poetry of the original. For example, "So snuggle in tight" becomes "Cierra los ojitos [close your little eyes]." "What happened today that made you laugh?" becomes "hoy llenamos de risas toda la pradera [today we filled the prairie with laughs]." While Campoy doesn't repeat the name of each animal ("little mouse; little mouse" and "little goose, little goose") as Fox does, she begins each sentence with "Es hora de dormir" and retains the rhyming couplet structure so that the catchy rhythm of the English remains. The Spanish version is in blue ink below the black ink English version on each page and separated by a blue line so the two versions are distinct. A lovely addition to any family's bedtime repertoire.
