Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner

Levitin weaves a tale of romance and religious faith between Jesse, a Hebrew slave, and Jennat a half-Egyptian/Syrian servant. While their backgrounds are at opposites, they are attracted to one another. The tale unfolds during the Israelite Exodus from Egypt and later wanderings in the desert. Jesse must come to terms with his desires versus his family's beliefs. Jennat must decide whether to continue her life as it is, or to forge a new, different kind of existence with Jesse.
