Overview

Espionage: A Reference Handbook illuminates the murky underworld of espionage and counterespionage efforts in the United States and around the world. Combining an academic treatment of the causes and forces that shape espionage with narrative accounts of how spying and spy catching are conducted, this is the only work of its kind to cover Benedict Arnold, J. Edgar Hoover, the CIA, the KGB, and Jay Pollard, all in one volume.

Though special attention is focused on the American experience, British, Soviet, and Israeli cases are presented, along with recent world events of terrorism and ethnic conflict, providing a unique comparative perspective on the international forces behind spying.

Explores the role that espionage plays in world politics today, discussing how it has changed over time, profiling famous spies, and pointing out the key role that advanced warning plays in national security.\

Gr 9 Up-"Espionage and its inevitable partner, counterespionage, are central to the pursuit of a state's national security." So begins the preface of this look at the role of spying in American history and world politics. The first section highlights American espionage activities from the Revolutionary War to "Post-September 11, 2001." The second part focuses on issues related to espionage in a global context. Activities of spies in Great Britain, Israel, China, the Soviet Union/Russia, and elsewhere are featured next. Biographical sketches of 34 figures include Benedict Arnold, Aldrich Ames, Harold "Kim" Philby, and the Rosenbergs, along with officials such as Richard M. Nixon, J. Edgar Hoover, and Joseph McCarthy. One of the book's strengths is its selection of excerpts from American documents and statements regarding the establishment of major agencies and their activities, such as "Project MINARET," authorizing spying on antiwar protestors, and the CIA and the Office of Homeland Security. An annotated 22-page list for further information completes the volume. Hastedt provides, in small accessible segments, a broad perspective on an aspect of American history only cursorily mentioned in traditional social studies classes.-Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.\
