Editorials

Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD(University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a multiauthored textbook of geriatric medicine, last published five years ago. New to this update is the addition of Barbara Resnick as an editor, adding a nursing perspective to the book for nurse practitioners. End of chapter summaries reflect assessment guidelines of ACOVE (Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders, a national program for care of frail older persons).
Purpose: The purpose is to describe geriatric medicine in such a way as to prepare physicians and nurse practitioners to provide care that is both evidence-based and individualized to older persons. These are worthy objectives indeed, and the book accomplishes them handsomely.
Audience: The audience includes nurse practitioner trainees, medical students, and postgraduate physicians who seek to understand and embrace the concepts of geriatric medicine. The authors are all experts in the field.
Features: This book covers all the important aspects of caring for older persons, ranging from understanding about aging, age-related changes in physiology, and diseases and syndromes found in older persons. It explains systems of care, how geriatrics is different than caring for younger adult patients, and the sites and domains of care. Beautifully organized and illustrated, the book includes meticulously selected web-based and literature citations. There is a slight bit more duplication in this edition than in previous ones, but this is not a serious drawback at all.
Assessment: This continues to be the leading U.S. introductory textbook in geriatric medicine. It is user friendly, well written and edited, and easy on the eyes. Not a single major concept is omitted. With some 400-plus pleasant pages, this can easily be read on a rotation in geriatric medicine. If I had a magic wand, I would wave it, and copies of this brilliant book would appear under the pillow of every hospitalist in the land. See if it doesn't resonate with you as well.

This is a compact, comprehensive textbook of geriatric medicine. The purpose is to present the fundamentals of geriatric medicine in an easy to understand format. All practicing physicians who care for older persons, medical students, residents, fellows, and the entire interdisciplinary team caring for older persons will derive benefit from this book. There is a plethora of very useful diagrams, tables, and appendixes of the most commonly used and needed forms as well as assessment tools in geriatric medicine, which greatly enhance the utility of this book. Sections on clinical glidepaths, iatrogenesis, home care, and ethics have been expanded or revised in this new edition. This book is like a good lite beer -- all the important points are highlighted, and the authors are essentially correct in most of what they say; this text could be swallowed whole in a geriatrics rotation. Every medical library should own this excellent book.
