Synopsis

This is the first book that deals with the dual character of complex nasal surgery, i.e. it equally covers both the functional and aesthetic aspects of septorhinoplasty.

The three main areas of complex nasal surgery are surgery of the septum, the different approaches in rhinoplasty, and endoscopic microsurgery. These are all covered, as well as aspects of endoscopic sinus surgery and postoperative treatment with topical corticosteroids.

Reviewer:Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD(Bridgeport Hospital)
Description:The authors have assembled a comprehensive, yet readable rhinoplasty book that will cast light upon the intricate world of nasal surgery. Like surgery of the nose it has been prepared and delivered to the reader with a high degree of precision and expertise.
Purpose:Rhinoplasty surgery is an adventure that takes the uninitiated into forbidding territories. Fortunately, Drs. Behrbohm and Tardy, from either side of the Atlantic, have consented to be the readers' guides on this great expedition. They feel that the ideal surgeon must be knowledgeable, supple, and progressive to successfully manage the countless nasal variations encountered in one's practice. To this end they have amassed a trove of specialists to "expedite this learning process.
Audience:Simply put, anyone performing rhinoplasty surgery will be rewarded by reading this book. Although nasal surgery requires both visual and tactile skills, the basic tenets must initially be well comprehended before embarking upon this process. This book satisfies these necessities. Students, residents and those more seasoned will find this book informative and fruitful.
Features:Nasal surgery and the various nuances of evaluation and ancillary therapies are presented in a properly honed-14 chapter format. Each chapter could be a minibook unto itself, accounting for the overlap of information and occasional repetition, which in nasal surgery is beneficial. The introductory chapter offers a retrospective of nasal surgery then moves into esthetics and the nose as both a respiratory and sensory organ. Later chapters more elaborately detail some of these topics, then cover surgical management of the outer and inner nose. Illustrations and standardized pre- and postoperative photographs grace each chapter allowing the more visually challenged to unquestionably comprehend the authors' intentions. Various sculpting techniques of the underlying cartilages come to life with the well orchestrated diagrams. If readers are not completely satisfied by the offering in this book, an unlikely event, there are numerous references at the end of each section.
Assessment:A most fortuitous blend of talent is offered readers through the amalgamation of German and American writers in this book. The apprentice would not be expected to assimilate the information in this book and commence surgery; however, it is an excellent point of embarkation and a superb book to foster additional insight into these sophisticated subjects for all others.
