Editorials

Reviewer: Martin J. Marcus, DDS(University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This book deals with problems of communication, esthetic principles, and basic esthetic treatments such as cosmetic contouring, bleaching, bonding porcelain laminates, and full crown restorations. The first edition was published in 1976.
Purpose: The purpose is to advance all aspects of the esthetic dental revolution as well as help patients and practitioners achieve greater and more satisfying esthetic outcomes. These objectives, though lofty, are very worthy and have been satisfied in a well thought out, comprehensive text.
Audience: This book is targeted for general dentists with a bias or slant towards esthetic dentistry, and prosthodontists, as well as dental students and residents. The editor is a very creditable source with a respected name in our field and with many friends who contributed a great deal to this text.
Features: It begins with the principles and concepts of dental esthetics and continues to cover a myriad of topics relating to the practice of esthetic dentistry: understanding color, marketing, photography, treatments, and solutions. Photographs, tables, technique pictures, troubleshooting graphs, and organized appendixes that give concise, well organized information are included. A unique feature is sections that contain commentary on patient expectations and behaviors that are well considered and to the point.
Assessment: It was a true delight to read this book. The flow was wonderful, full of insights, principles, problem solving, and treatment options as well as procedural how to's, etc. The numerous photos, graphs, references, tables, etc., allow a greater basic understanding to the ever-developing world of esthetic dentistry. This rapidly growing field needs continual updating of information, and since 1976 when this was a dream, we have now developed this most rapidly growing section of dentistry. The editor long ago recognized the need. He has now given us the direction.
